The UN created the Codex Alimentarius Commission (or Codex) in 1963 through the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), to promote food control and “fair” practices in the global food trade.
The Codex Alimentarius Commission is an inter-governmental organization with 170 member countries. The Commission coordinates the work of governmental and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on food standards. Most of the international NGOs participating in Codex meetings are the terrible trans-national corporations. Non-governmental organizations have observer status, but do not have the right to vote.
Codex has become the main international organization that sets standards in the global food trade and is hosted by the OAA’s headquarters in Rome.
