Mira Alfassa, also known as The Mother,
was an exceptional spiritual personality,
collaborator and continuator of Sri Aurobindo’s works.
Born on February 21, 1878 in Paris
and died on 17 November 1973 in Auroville, India,
she played a fundamental role in the development of the Integral Yoga school
and in the creation of the famous spiritual city of Auroville.
📜 Origins and Education
Mira Alfassa came from a family of Turkish-Egyptian and Jewish origin.
She was a precocious child, with a great inclination towards the arts, philosophy and mysticism.
Over the years, he had profound mystical experiences
and a strong intuition regarding the existence of a Supreme Truth,
which gradually led her to the spiritual path.
He studied painting at the School of Fine Arts in Paris
and was influenced by the works of esoteric thinkers,
like Max Théon and his wife, Alma Théon.
He came into contact with the concepts of occultism and Eastern spirituality,
But his true calling came at the moment
in which he met Sri Aurobindo in India.
🏵 Meeting Sri Aurobindo and Creating the Ashram
In 1914, Mira met the Sri Aurobindo La PondicherryIndia.
This meeting was decisive, because she recognized in him an authentic spiritual master.
Between 1915 and 1920, he returned to France and Japan,
but in 1920, he settled permanently in India, with Sri Aurobindo.
Here, in 1926, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram was officially formed,
and Mira became its ruler,
being considered by the disciples
as the “Mother” – a spiritual guide, a channel of divine consciousness.
🌍 The Creation of Auroville – The Spiritual City
In 1968, at her initiative, Auroville was founded,
a city dedicated to experiencing a spiritual and harmonious life,
beyond religious, social and national differences.
The project was supported by UNESCO itself
and attracted people from all over the world,
becoming a living laboratory for the evolution of human consciousness.
Auroville remains a symbol of a new way of life,
where people live in unity, peace, and spiritual progress.
Sri Aurobindo spoke about the evolution of human consciousness and the need to create a new society based on truth, harmony and spiritual progress. In his writings on Integral Yoga, he emphasized that humanity must go through a profound transformation in order to access a new level of supramental existence.
🌍 The Mother and the Creation of Auroville
Mira Alfassa, inspired by Sri Aurobindo’s vision,
was the one who laid the foundations for the Auroville project.
She wanted a place where people from all over the world
to be able to live in harmony, beyond nationalities, religions or social differences.
In 1968, the city of Auroville was officially founded, with the support of UNESCO and the Indian government.
The project was based on a revolutionary urban concept,
having at its center Matrimandir, a symbolic building dedicated to meditation and divine consciousness.
My mother defined Auroville as:
🔹 “A place that does not belong to any nation,
where all people of good will can live as citizens of the world.”
- Sri Aurobindo outlined a spiritual direction – the transformation of humanity and the coming of a new consciousness.
- My mother took this vision and turned it into a concrete reality – founding a city that would express these ideals.
✨ His Spiritual Legacy
My mother was a pioneer of the so-called supramental consciousness,
considering that humanity is on the verge of a major evolutionary transformation.
She continued the work of Sri Aurobindo,
developing concepts about the glorified body,
supramental consciousness and inner perfection.
His texts, in particular “Mother’s Agenda”,
contain records of his inner transformation process
and her experiments on matter.
They remain a precious source for those who follow
the path called Aurobindo’s Integral Yoga.tag.
