Yoga, this wonderful treasure given by India to the West, gives us a lot of benefits, especially when we practice often and constantly. This fact is revealed by studies conducted by Chantal Villemure and Catherine Bushnell of the National Center for Alternative Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland, United States.
Using computed tomographic scanning, Chantal Villemure was able to detect more gray matter in certain areas of the brain, in people who practiced yoga regularly, compared to the control group of people who did not practice yoga. “I found that the more hours a week they practiced, the more developed the areas of the brain were!” which clearly shows, that there is a correlation between the practice of yoga and brain development.
Yogis have a larger volume of the brain in the area of the somatosensory cortex, which contains a mental map of the body, in the area of the parietal cortex, involved in the direction of attention, and of the visual cortex, which the researcher posits that its development is amplified by visualization techniques. The hippocampus, another region of the brain, considered important in the control of stress, is also more developed in yoga practitioners, as is the precuneus and the posterior cingular cortex, which are the areas responsible for the self-concept.
“All these areas of the brain can be engaged by various elements of yoga practice,” Villemure said.
Usually, yogis, dedicate 70% of practice to physical postures, from Hatha Yoga, and about 20% of the time to meditation, and 10% to breathing exercises, pranayama; these percentages are typical for yoga sessions practiced in the west. Villemoure presented the results of his research in November 2013 at the annual meeting of the Society for Neurosciences in San Diego, California, United States.
Having scientific proof of the fact that as we practice, our brain becomes more efficient, we will be more motivated to include yoga in our daily routine, in order to fully benefit from this wonderful art, which helps us live our lives in a state of peace, harmony and balance!
